The other thing that wears out at about the same rate is rod ends. 8-12" frost heaves\pot holes, large amounts of unsprung weight, and 6-8 months of a heavy salted…

Ball joints and wheel bearings are absolutely considered normal maintenance.

Was going to say exactly this. I tend to leave 2-3 car lengths, which is more than most people, and just enough for some asshole to squeeze in and fuck it up for everyone.

Yeah it would be nice if everyone drove like a robot and thought about traffic flow and whether it makes a difference or not to move into any open space. We are forced to stay on the bumper of the car in front of us and drive inefficiently because some asshole will immediately move into that space if it exists.

You must have some reasonably sane drivers on your commute. If I tried leaving a gap that large between me and the next guy, 5-7 cars would immediately pass and merge into the space.

As I read the title it occurred to me “Oh man I totally used to do that, how embarrassing.” but then that thought spawned another: “Huh, I don’t do that anymore. Why not?”
