This week on Why John Wells is an asshat we talk about mental illness. Here’s what John has to say about bipolar ‘disease’[sic]:

I’ll jump on the Logic? Shameless doesn’t know her bandwagon and say: remember when Kev and V were so desperate for a child that they had a threesome with V’s mom? Because V was infertile? Shameless’ writers don’t. They may have eventually had the twins, but miracle babies are just that - infertility problems don’t go

100% they do not, no.

I was hoping Fiona would get arrested for DUI for the crash and sent to jail for a long time because of her priors. With this episode, I’m out.

Never been any logic to many of the show’s incidents, talk about willing suspension of disbelief. You can’t blow up a van by putting a burning rag in the gas cap (Ian), how about the guy falling off the apt roof & suing, he “had a good case.” What? He had zero case, and where was her insurance company lawyer? Why

It’s not just you, go back and watch Monica’s arc in season 2 or Ian’s in season 5 - they were very, very different portrayals of bipolar, managing to balance the drama with some comedy that didn’t come at the expense of the character’s humanity.

I assume that the writers didn’t want to pile too much on Fiona that they had no ability to resolve, but come on. How do you crash your car on a residential street and just walk away from it without attracting any attention? Not a single person heard the yelling, the screeching tires, or the loud crash?

Of the million missing storylines of this show did they also drop the fact that Kevin has another child, a son, with Vee’s mother? Any insight on why they moved Vee and Fiona so far away from each other? You wouldn’t even think they were still friends.  It also came as inorganic the way the siblings, lead by Debbie,

yeah, why the hell is mickey even in jail and not witness protection, or some shit?

That would be wild. And infuriating.

re: Bonnie’s kid, wasn’t the storyline that her father basically pimped her out? so it could have been anyone’s.

I personally thought this episode was the best one thus far. And can we give a shout out to HTGAWM for actually having compelling ancillary characters. They managed to turn Nate into a character I actually care about and they’re also giving him so hefty material. But it’s working.

...the flash forwards this season are borderline lifeless.

Yes (as ever), Shameless does the bare minimum with the research. Rolling on a cartel means serving your sentence in protective custody (aka Solitary), he’d be in a federal rather than state prison and he’d be in the witness security program once he was out. There’s no way they could just spend a little time together

I don’t disagree with any points you made in your review, but somehow, the moment between Lip and Ian (“thanks for being my brother”) made me cry. Yes, the overall situation was contrived, but these dang characters still get to me.

As a Gallavich shipper, I’m happy they brought Mickey back even if its effect is actually to avoid the anger from fans that would have arisen from a really weak exit for Ian, vs. inserting a remotely plausible plot point - I.e. Mickey cutting a deal in the couple of weeks’ time that he would’ve known about Ian going

I was torn. I’m sad to see Cameron leave but that has been my issues with his current storyline...it had no where to go but prison. Sadly the writers haven’t done a good job these past few seasons with many of the characters, especially Ian. It was like they had no clue what to do with him without Mickey. In my

Wow, I was really surprised at Monaghan’s departure but hopefully it will open him up for much better things. I’m glad that he at least gets to go out with a happy ending.

“Ms Rowling, can you understand why fans are upset that-”

They could’ve avoided all this if they had just let Colin Farrell play the role rather than do that ridiculous switch to Depp. At the theatre I was at, a lot of people laughed when he transformed into Johnny Depp, which I don’t think was the reaction they were going for.
