CN is actually quite progressive, especially in comparison to Nickelodeon (Legend of Korra notwithstanding) and Disney - the other two of the "Big 3" cartoon studios/networks. Alexia Khadime was the voice actress for Sardonyx. Unsurprisingly, she's a well-known theatre actress in her native England, which would explain why Sardonyx sounded so theatrical.
