The first D&D episode of Community worked so well BECAUSE Chase/ Pierce was an asshole. Over time that becomes somewhat unsustainable for your show though 

even back in season 1 of Community, long before any drama blew up, if you watch the DVD special feature “cast evaluations”, you can see Dan Harmon and Donald Glover sarcastically joking around about how “not” racist Chevy Chase is.

Now I’m going to guess this explains Pierce’s father and the fact that Pierce’s full name was Piercenald Anastasia Hawthorne.

He’s both a legendary comedian and asshole. In fact I think for a good portion of his career, his ability to play a kind of Bugs Bunny “ain’t I a stinker” smartass was a large part of his appeal (not that it excuses his asshole-ry to coworkers).

I treat Chevy Chase like you treat a racist elderly relative. You kinda just ignore it because you ain’t going to change them and they are going to die soon.
