All of those movies were in fact better than Infinity War.
All of those movies were in fact better than Infinity War.
...now that you mention it, why the Hell isn’t Annihilation on this list?
I like a lot of what I’m seeing here (particularly happy for the shout-outs for First Reformed and The Endless) but I’m still not sure I can agree with the idea that something like Ready Player One makes it on here but Annihilation gets fucked.
Annihilation is one of the best films I’ve ever seen, and it’ll be a fantastic year for films if it doesn’t end up as my favorite of 2018. Mildly surprised it isn’t on here.
Where the fuck is ANNIHILATION?
I was shocked to see RPO on this list. Not only is it one of Spielberg’s worst, but the further I got away from it I think the movie and its message is actively evil.
The movie you just described is essentially 9 to 5, also why are you equating women refusing to invest in your low budget film with women in the studio system not wanting to direct? That’s a false equivalency if I ever heard one.
Yes.....indeed Professor Interrobang. I feel like this is a similar situation to why we don’t see any female Presidents in the United States, or many female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. These are simply things women are not driven to do. You see, the woman’s DNA drives her to partake in things that play to her…
Jesus Christ. The logical part of me wants to take the time to write up a long logical, unemotional response to this but the simple answer is: in the whole time you spent writing this comment did you think for TWO SECONDS that filmmaking is not something that men like to do more often than women, but something that…
I think the slight is the fact that the field isn’t just male driven, but that the deck is categorically stacked against women who want to be filmmakers. As we’ve known for awhile and has been put under even greater scrutiny thanks to the metoo movement is that Hollywood is run by boorish pig men who do everything in…
sounds like you definitely just don’t like Amy Schumer, her monologue was great and well received by the audience, and her reaction shots in the game show sketch got some of the bigger laughs during that segment.
“destroy his life”...she responded to him on Twitter when he made a snarky joke about her, then he apologized, then she told him it was no big deal.
I really liked this bit, it did play like a fully realized character in a way that I enjoyed, but in any case I don’t think that whether or not teens watch SNL is the point. It’s older people *raises hand* laughing at stereotypical teenisms.
Yup....no woman has ever commented on tampon sizing before your (male) friend. I mean “wide set vagina” and heavy flow is literally a joke from Mean Girls, but sure.... it sounds more like your friend’s joke is premised on limited translation options for a question in a foreign country.
Amy Schumer is not really that much better or worse than before some folks decided she was problematic.
Seems a little cold (or a little sweet, depending on how you look at it) for them to have Luke Null bring out his mother for what’s looking like his second-to-last show.
“art”, LOL
I hate everything about this story.
Dowd, I always make sure to read your film festival write ups. I don’t ever get around to seeing 90% of the movies you write about, but I love reading about the festivals themselves from your POV and your thoughts on the films you see. The writing is always insightful and accessible. Thanks for continuing to do this.
Gonna give you a semi-condescending protip and that is: “It doesn’t know what it wants to be” is rarely an accurate criticism and even more rarely an insightful one.
I like Duplass, but there’s one aspect of his casting here that is admittedly confusing: He’s playing Charlize Theron’s brother, and Ron Livingston’s brother-in-law, when he’d be perfect casting as Livingston’s actual brother.
