I started to think about it and realized that I have no idea what Kim Kardashian, one of the most photographed humans on the planet, actually looks like. It’s really fucked. The two main purposes of food are to sustain life, and for social bonding. This is a meal given to someone that’s going to be killed in an hour, eaten alone. I get that these are often terrible people eating the meals, but this is really some sadistic shit designed by the state.

There just isn’t a moral or logistical argument one can make in favor of it. It’s not a deterrent, it costs astronomically more tax dollars than just jailing prisoners for life, there is no way to guarantee that only the guilty suffer capital punishment... the only argument in favor is straight up bloodlust.

We actually treat sick and old animals much better. Because pharma companies are cool with selling effective euthanasia drugs to veterinarians, the animals almost always die instantly with no pain whatsoever. Is it just me or is the “last meal” thing really disturbing to folks? It’s so fucking perverse even though it’s sold as some sort of small mercy. The punishment itself is an abomination, but this just adds and additional layer of fucked-upedness to it.

I’ve done absolutely zero research into it from a prison perspective, but have a reasonably solid knowledge of the hospital perspective of covert euthanasia (through an academic route... I’m not Harold Shipman).

I wonder if you’ve done any research to see why states don’t use morphine. Different prisoners will have different tolerance levels for opiates. You would think but it seems to be more complicated than that, probably because they are narcotics. And the companies that make them work hard to make sure they are not used for executions. Which only leads to more suffering when the executions take place anyway, so it’s super stupid.

Surely something like morphine is manufactured by hundreds of pharmacies globally, many of which sell to anyone with a chequebook, rather than these obscure mono-manufacturer drugs.

I agree. I have pointed out more than once that the ridiculousness of companies not letting these products be used is only causing more harm than good.

It seems like some people would rather these inmates suffer a worse death than they have to, in order to make a point about the death penalty. I don’t get it.
