It didn't help the scammer at all; in fact it's why he got caught. I'm guessing he wanted to use a similar-looking email address to sell his story that his original email got "hacked" (in order to get the list of order numbers). Pretty dumb to alert the real user by sending the chat follow-up emails to him, though.
