IMO Kubrick did the natural lighting thing better in Barry Lyndon, but I am not familiar with the technical details of HOW he did it better in Barry Lyndon. I appreciate your expertise on the mater, however.

I think Jonah Hill would do pretty fabulously in the role. He can do that overheated kind of geekery really well.
