I rewatched Dune the other day and thought it really deserved a shot at best picture so am pleasantly surprised to see it nominated. I doubt it’ll win thanks to the academy’s anti-genre bias but you never know, especially with such a light year. Kind of surprised Macbeth didn’t get the nod as it’s the kind of thing

Do I think that abusing an AI will turn some software user into a physical abuser (physical as in “IRL”)? No.

“it’s clear we need to identify abusive behaviors no matter who or what is on the receiving end.”

Like there are comments on here saying people who abuse the bots are somehow real abusers. Have any of them ever played a video game? Most games have you killing/harming “people.Does that make you a monster? By that logic that would make most video game players war criminals.

I feel like i’m taking crazy pills, why are we equating sexual harassment/assualt, the same as people interacting with lines of code? The women being harressed in VR spaces is terrible, but why is that linked to chat bots? I’m so confused.

Frankly, both the focus and conclusions of this article are fairly baffling. A few initial notes, from someone who has likely explored this particular subreddit community more extensively than the author:

That is very not obvious, and has been proven wrong again and again, and despite being proven wrong again and again, is always stated whenever there’s some new technology. The same exact thing was said about violent video games. And movies. “This is going to corrupt the children blargh! Isn’t it obvious that if these

I don’t think you mean “bad faith,” but in any case, it seems like the grays is the only place where there’s some critical thinking being applied. How exactly do you even defend statements like this:

New rule, how about we stop using the word “abuse” in terms of people interacting with software programs? At best, it’s idiotic, and creepy misplaced anthropomorphism, at worst, it’s actively offensive to actual humans who’ve been actually abused by other actual humans. You can’t abuse, or sexually harass, a chatbot

Loooooooot of bad faith arguments in the grays today.

Or for someone who punches, or humps! their pillow. Or somehow who verbally eviscerates an unresponsive IVR. Saying nasty things to a wall vs saying nasty things to a human being, these are not comparable things. One of them is shitty, and one of them has nothing to do with morality or ethics or being a good or a bad

I couldn’t care less about what someone says to a chatbot. But it’s actually fairly disturbing that some decent size percentage of the human population is incapable of understanding that a bot is inanimate, or that morality or ethics is somehow involved when an individual is interacting with a bot. This is some crazy

AI’s aren’t sentient. They’re not people. They’re just algorithms that rely on massive piles of data. Flagging a person who ‘absues’ an AI program for bad behavior is as silly as flagging the person running over pedestrians in Grand Theft Auto. It’s not the red flag you think it should be that the next James Alex

This is just a rehashing of the violence in video games begets violence in the real life, which has been roundly debunked. The opposite has been shown in that case in all studies done on the subject and I’m sure this would have similar results.

I firmly and fully believe that grandparents should respect the wishes of the child’s parents, and that grandma was way the hell out of line here, if the mom had explicitly asked her (multiple times, apparently) not to give the children fast food.

Surely you mean “ass do I have put my foot into?”

“Such a shame about Hyde dying in that meth lab explosion.”

The more I think about it, the more the entire thing will hinge on how much in-universe time has passed since the original show.  Having everyone but Lizzy Caplan still be at Party Down over a decade later would just feel sad, unless they’ve got a damn good reason for it.

Pro tip: When you see a pile of fresh snow with no foot tracks or shoveling done in front of the customer entrance for a business, they are definitely closed. Dude shouldn’t have needed to walk up to the door to figure that out.

Thousands of years? It was likely millions or billions of years.
