A good premise can help a lot, but a lot of sports anime I tried to get into either got so overdramatic that it just became funny when it was supposed to be taken seriously or they introduced some kind of sixth sense or super power because they realized the cycle of Personal crap-shool/work-match-repeat was getting…

I suppose that’s true, but I can’t help but compare what I see now to what I grew up with. Sure, Bleach began to suck pretty quickly after its high point and Naruto dragged a bit, but when they were good they were awesome. I guess that’s at least partially nostalgia, though.
