5 stars for this post. Scientists throughout history have been frequently surprised and baffled by discoveries and many times have been so perplexed by a discovery that they dismissed it outright for decades. This is far from a first.

With something that small (and rotating relatively slowly compared to Earth), it would be very surprising. If what we know believe about our own planet’s process is true, it would seem very unlikely for the same process to be happening inside Pluto.
1. There are numerous reasons why cratering rates might differ that far out in the solar system, not the least of which is that our primary reference for crater rates are all rocky planets in the inner solar system and we have no real idea how different it should be way, way out there.
“Geology can also refer generally to the study of the solid features of any celestial body”.
There is just too much amazingness going on here (Flat Earth Society?!?!). I for one thank Zoroaster for all these conspiracy theorists bringing endless humor to my day.
The massive canyon to the right is very surprising. It really must be active, right?
It isn’t strange at all. Google isn’t trying to improve the results of its search engine, it is trying to improve the results of its products.
Hey Thanos gets lonely out there crushing worlds. Guy has to relieve some stress now and then.
Man of Steel was flat out terrible.
I agree with including Push, but not Matrix or Jumper. There’s no real super powers in Matrix, just circumventing a virtual world. Jumper is close, but involves a singular ability, whereas the powers in Chronicle were much more diverse and identifiable as super powers.
Is the director’s cut really that much better. I love the Daredevil comics, but god the movie was so awful. It is one of the few I’ve walked out on. I have a hard time believing any amount of editing would improve it that much.
I was surprised to see DOFP so low. It is #2 for me in the X-Men series - just after X2.
I agree with 90% of this list, except:
I’d say both. Sensationalism is certainly effective at grabbing clicks and I’m sure a lot of fine journalists cringe at having to utilize it so much, but there has to be some happy medium wherein a headline (and article) is both intriguing and factual.
Thank you. I’m getting a little tired of these simpleton headlines that show no knowledge of what the article is talking about - or even science in general. More and more they phrase things as if science is just willing something into existence.
“ their existence changed the way people thought about particle physicists”
Maybe I’m just biased cause I’ve seen many marmots in the wild before. I’ve even had a grumpy one “chase me” once.
I know this column is mostly tongue-in-cheek, but you can’t honestly think “everything would pretty much be like it is now” if we knew the world was ending. No damn way there is still sporting events and awards show. NO WAY. All of it becomes meaningless, there would be massive chaos, economic collapse, etc. It is…
You are flat out wrong about baths. I don’t enjoy them personally (I take 1-2 a year when I’m feeling really sick), but what you fail to understand is that most of the grime, oil, and bacteria that sticks to your skin over the course of the day is easily lubricated off you (and then diluted) in the bath. It doesn’t…
I’m sure the Coen Bros know what a marmot is. Calling a ferret a marmot was very in character for The Dude.
