Nonsense. In August 2007, Obama was polling between 19 and 27%, second only to Hillary. We are talking about candidates who can’t get to 2%. In 2007 that was guys like Kucinich, Gravel, and Dodd. These are not people who have any chance of winning.

Key difference: Obama was acting to try to fix the problem. Trump is spouting inflammatory racist rhetoric, and has actively revoked some Obama-era gun controls.

Yeah, this cuts to the heart of the problem with journalism. The Time’s original headline was true, but grounded in the outdated (if ever true) idea that we can take the president at his word. It’s insufficiently speculative, and I don’t think the new headline fixes that.
