Yeah, you don’t want to do the whole thing. If you are doing more than half the length, flying will be faster. NYP does have good train connections if you are going somewhere near the Subway/LIRR/NJ Transit/PATH (though some of those may have other Amtrak stations that work even better)

It does sometimes break down. Of course a long pre-check line might still get you through faster, since it moves quicker.

That has never happened to me, but I have had it happen to friends of mine. Planes can get delayed too of course.
