My point is always, start with a basic car that you will enjoy very much and then you can appreciate the added fun of a Golf GTi over a Golf, or something more luxurious...etc. As a first car, go cheap. You can also get a Focus or a Fiesta in the same used price range. Fun, economical.
Not trying to be mean, but if he thinks a 4800lbs diesel SUV is fun to drive, then this open a very large selection of vehicles.... The X5 is comfortable, luxurious but the handling is not what I would call fun. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
