Probably just like the 996/997 (and I’d assume others too) generation. There is a shelf back there between the back seats and where the window ends. It’s not huge in the 996/997, but it’s big enough for a couple backpacks etc. 

Just a quick look at their website shows 3 in CT, 2 in NJ and 1 in NY all within 3hr of you.

My parents were the same. Then the day came when their AWD Honda Crosstour couldn’t get up my icy driveway and had to take my wife’s FWD Jetta TDI wagon on winter tires to get home while I salted the driveway and waited for it to melt.

I do not know the answer, but that sounds like a bargain M3 to me.
