Probably just like the 996/997 (and I’d assume others too) generation. There is a shelf back there between the back seats and where the window ends. It’s not huge in the 996/997, but it’s big enough for a couple backpacks etc.

My parents were the same. Then the day came when their AWD Honda Crosstour couldn’t get up my icy driveway and had to take my wife’s FWD Jetta TDI wagon on winter tires to get home while I salted the driveway and waited for it to melt.
