“maybe do some reading on your own time?”
“It’s about who gets to tell which people’s stories.”
“It is not, however, okay to dress up in blackface or an “Indian” costume, because people’s ethnic identities aren’t costumes and shouldn’t be trivialized as such.”
I’ve really never understood the problem with actors playing roles of characters when they don’t have every trait of the character, and this article spends so much time wallowing in unearned snark that it doesn't even make an attempt to make a case for why it's bad, just assuming everyone will agree. C'est la vie, I…
The incidents she relates are horrifying and I believe them completely. Hopefully Shia never acts in a film or play or TV show again. Actors are not entitled to a career after commiting abuse and he has had way more chances than are warranted.
His obituary for Richard Nixon remains a classic:
And for what it's worth, Whedon played a big role in a lot of that initial planning.
I’ve already purchased tickets to see this at the drive-in on Friday. Looking forward to it.
My favorite scenes from movies that didn’t make the list:
He’s great in everything, but I think my favorite role of his was Enabran Tain in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His time there was mostly lots of scenery chewing with Andrew Robinson, another great character actor, and it was just wonderful.
Granted! “At your worst” is relative, just as “at your best” is relative. Everything is relative. And Dahl’s antisemitism is a pretty bad worst (somewhere on the scale between your hypothetical dickishness to your family, and actually pulling a Hitler). But I did not perceive in the family’s statement an attempt to…
I got a code for an advance screening of the film tonight (which isn’t TOO advance, as everyone else can watch it tomorrow), and I’m looking forward to it. It’s a truly shameful event upon which more light needs to be shined and I hope this documentary helps accomplish that.
Dune was the best of the big budget trailers I saw this year, as best I can recall.
I was reading a recipe the other day and was momentarily baffled when it described something as "boku," before realizing what it meant and laughing. So this is a roundabout way of saying "thanks for using beaucoup correctly."
I didn't think it was odd, either. They were saying his antisemitism was Dahl at his absolute worst (which is pretty clearly a condemnation of those beliefs) and reminding people that the awful stuff you say will hang around forever.
He was just like Bugs Bunny, really.
“...and, yes, some theaters—near you. And before trekking out to see a movie on the big screen, please read up on the health risks.”
And Stark was in The Matrix! Not that that has anything to do with Mad Max, but hey.
I loved all the different names the characters had for him. My favorite was “Green Chalk.”
Worth noting for Farscape fans, he also played the great villain Grunchlk in several episodes of the show and miniseries. He was positively odious (in the most delightful way) in that. Great actor
