That reminds me of this hilarious exchange from the first season of Veep.

“Pulling out his Oscar” now means something very different with Spacey.
He doesn’t say that sexuality is a choice. He doesn’t say he “chooses to be gay.” He says he “chooses to live as a gay man.” They may sound a bit alike but they mean very different things, and there’s nothing wrong with that aspect of his statement except insofar as he’s using it to deflect attention away from an…
Agreed. There should be a requirement that any video content be accompanied by a transcript.
“...the men however should all be ashamed.”
I mean, no, obviously it isn’t. Which he outright says: that he is ashamed of what he didn’t do and his behavior was horrible and wrong. He says he is complicit, and he is sorry for what he did.
He doesn’t just call out Weinstein, he calls out himself. He’s brutal about his own failings and how shameful it was that he ignored things he should have ignored. And that’s a lot braver than most of the people in Hollywood are being right now.
“There are no heroes here.”
He could’ve taken the same tack many others are and said, “I had no idea! This is terrible and shocking!” Instead, he says what should be said, and he (appropriately) calls himself out as well. I give someone a lot of props for acknowledging what he did wrong and why.
I think Dotrice would’ve been excellent as Pycelle, but I was fine with Julian Glover’s performance. Plus it gives him the bragging rights that he got to play a villain in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Game of Thrones. So that’s something.
They’re really cottoning to that young Lee Greenwood kid, too.
She’s got strange, sad, malnourished guys to do that for her.
True. If I recall correctly, Martin originally intended Dotrice to have an even larger role on the show — I think they wanted him for Pycelle? But he was in poor health and couldn’t take it on, and they eventually got him a couple of episodes as Hallyne instead.
Huh. I guess I must have very different musical tastes compared to a lot of AV Club staffers, because I like a whole lot of these songs. I love the theme music for Angel and Firefly, and especially The Wire (the Blind Boys of Alabama version is my favorite of the five used for the show), and I listen in full any time…
It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it does happen a lot. And most of the time people don’t ignore it because they don’t feel threatened or harmed, they ignore it because they DO feel threatened. People who are sexually assaulted typically feel ashamed, afraid to make a scene because they feel embarrassed that it…
I mean, it seems like dismissing James Hong as an “extra” or “set dressing” is crazy dismissive to me, but hey, whatever.
Definitely. I thought season 3 was a big step up in quality from season 2, and season 2 was a big step up from season 1. It’s a shame the show got canceled.
It’ll be interesting to see how Amazon handles the ethnicity of the characters in its upcoming Snow Crash adaptation. That world is definitely not all white, and the main character is half-black, half-Japanese. I hope they stay true to that.
Die Hard in a <blank> worked for action movies for a good 20 years.
Dark Matter did it earlier this season. It was a pretty entertaining episode.
