It sounds like you are mostly disappointed by Whedon’s dialogue, which is more than fair. I like the one liners when they are relevant and work, much less so when they feel artificial and forced (which with every rewatch feels a little more).
No, it isn’t joke. He is one of the reason this is happening from his portrayal of Pike in Discovery S2. Personally I thought for playing a mute he did good job in Inhumans (even if it was overall meh). Go watch him in Hell on Wheels (along with ST alum Colm Meaney) to get a better idea of him as an actor though.

Amazing how deep that backdoor pilot was in all of S2 of Discovery that we’re not only okay with but excited that we get yet another prequel (and arguably covering ground originally supposed to be covered by Discovery, both in and out of universe).
It’d be fascinating to see some of the first contacts with Federation worlds that the fans know from TOS and TNG. For example, when did the Federation first encounter Betazoids? As a casual Trek fan, I really loved Anson Mount as Pike, so I’m thrilled to hear this. I was actually about to cancel my CBS AA sub, since Discovery s3 isn’t here yet, but now I think I’m going to let it roll as a thank you.
I kinda hope they bring back the opening monologue. Be great to have Mount’s take on “Space...the final frontier.” Especially since that’s where the show’s title comes from.
