Is it? It has some hilarious moments (the singing telegram, “flames across my face”, Tim Curry doing Tim Curry things), but overall the movie feels like a bit of a slog to me.

I’m reminded of the Monty Python album Matching Tie and Handkerchief where side 2 was double grooved. You would get completely different material depending on which groove you dropped the needle in.
The worst part of FFVII for me is chocobo breeding and racing. It’s so obnoxious getting the right greens to attract good chocobos, the right nuts to breed different colored ones, and the janky-ass racing sections to increase your odds of getting better chocobos. It’s a 10-hour grindfest to get the gold chocobo, and…
The funny thing is I avoid using Chocobos in any FF game because I’d rather grind experience as I make my way through the game.
That’s something FFVII:R got right. You can switch between party members whenever. In fact, you have to. It’s a great fusion of ATB and real-time combat. (And when you’re not controlling a character, they’re not completely useless.)
Yeah, it takes about 5-7 hours before finally leaving Midgar in the original. It was such a huge relief to finally leave. The game finally feels like a normal FF game after that.
But even then, it still pales in comparison to IV and VI. (But then again, I’m biased--I prefer my RPGs to have big ensembles. The job system is the antithesis to that.)
Leaving Midgar was such a huge relief. 5-6 hours without an overworld made saving my progress really annoying. It felt like the save points were just a little too far apart.
FFVI is the Infinity War of Final Fantasy. Massive cast of protagonists, but you could argue the main character is really Kefka. There are so many things I could declare “the best” about the game: the story (and how it relates to gameplay: linear first half and completely open second half), the music, the huge…
The best was Triple Triad (as long as you avoid the Random rule).
It took me a while to understand the Junction system. Once I figured it out, I didn’t hate it. Yeah, it’s needlessly grindy since you need to max draw spells to get the full benefit, and then I would never cast magic because of the resulting stat loss. But like Precious-Roy says, making your characters hilariously OP…
My thoughts exactly on materia. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really fun system, but the only thing that differentiated the characters beyond that were their base stats and limit breaks.
Agreed. I hated the Paradigm Shift system. It played like a too-simplified version of the Gambit system. My favorite part of the Gambit system was meticulously programming all my characters for very specific situations. The Paradigm Shift system took that all away from me.
Why else would Disney buy both Star Wars and Marvel?
I didn’t know they were AI generated when I saw them, but my impression was they looked like an animation studio had 2 days to put them together, so that makes sense.
They should recast him with Terrance Howard.
You misunderstand me. I enjoy the fuck out of the MI movies, and I sure as hell like the characters more than Top Gun: Maverick. (The only non-Plane Goes Zoom moment from Maverick I liked was Val Kilmer’s cameo.)
I just really wanted to hate it and get that dopamine rush of being so right.
First reactions are pointless. For example, the first reactions for Quantumania made it sound like the best MCU film ever when it was nothing more than perfectly serviceable.
Is this the same lawyer who thought it was a good idea releasing the texts thinking it would exonerate Majors but only made him look more guilty instead?
