Fuck, Kara, you really know how to wrap up a post. That deserves all the applause!!

Here’s hoping that people here remember: THIS KID IS NOT HIS BROTHER!
I feel like the anti-gay bigots have been making so much noise lately that this move really won’t get the attention it deserves for its monstrosity. This isn’t refusing to issue a marriage license, or bake a cake, or letting the high schoolers have a LGBT club. These are children. This man is announcing an official…
I also grew up WELS; when I got old enough to realize that this was a church which did not allow women to vote, because that might allow them to exert authority over a man (?!????!!!!!), I was 1000% done with that shit.
My mother was raised Missouri Synod, and even now in her mid 60s she struggles with her “role” as a woman. Just last week I had to talk her out of quitting her final quarter of grad school, because she still feels like her role is in the home and serving other people. She swears that God is punishing her for seeking…
One of the high schools in my hometown was run by WELS, and they made the local Catholic high school look like a bastion of liberalism. Since they forbade dancing, the homecoming dance and senior prom involved the kids getting dressed up and then taking in a film in the gym (balloons, streamers, the whole deal - just…
In church elections or civil elections? Definitely no voting in church elections. But you can probably vote in civil elections if you vote the way your husband tells you to. Watching Michelle Bachmann finesse this was always fun.
The women are complementing the men. It's a one way street.
WELS takes it to a whole different level. Like the Missouri Synod won’t let women be pastors, but they can run the Sunday School. They can be on the church council but not the President. WELS won’t allow women in anything that might be considered leadership at all.
Men are so insecure in their masculinity and terrified a woman will do better in life they use religion to oppress. It’s disgusting. Me? I’d prefer the devil to their idea of God.
Damn, I grew up Missouri Synod, and I thought they were bad. Though it could also be that it was a tiny church in a small Texas city.
Oh and this is purely my bias I have never gotten over. There was a WELS church/school down the street from my house growing up. We always used their playground after school/in the summer. One time 2 little shits yelled at my brother and me for swinging there because “we didn’t belong.” At the time I thought the kids…
I grew up WELS for 18 years. They’re hateful and misogynist as hell. I once had a conversation with our church’s pastor in which he told me that feminism had “eaten a hole” in my soul that “allowed the devil to get in.”
Honestly, I’d much prefer if ALL schools affiliated with religion had their federal funding pulled. It leave more funds for kids in public school.
Another WELS refugee, I see. As a gay kid who endured 9 years of K-8 education with them, I share your worry.
I grew up ELCA, the liberal-est of the Lutherans, but in Wisconsin and holy shit the WELS are assholes. The only WELS church service I went to (niece being baptized) was right after Anna Nicole Smith died. The pastor brought her up and “look where her lifestyle got her.” It was so mean and unnecessary. I’ve never been…
A friend of mine told me recently that his uncle told him that he would be explaining “the truth” of homosexuality to his young 4 year old son (truth being that it is an evil and terrible choice that sinful people make) but would be sure to do it in a way that “honors” my friend because, you know, they’re family and…
This really sucks but it’s a religious school so I can’t say I’m too surprised. Pull any and all federal funding though because this is discrimination pure and simple.
I’m fine with Bernie staying in the race to accumulate votes and show Democrats that there is broad, national support for a progressive agenda. I am not alright with him staying in the race in a desperate bid to win.
She didn’t say nothin’ about Mussolini.
