Just going to repost my own theory from the announcement trailer comments. Since I’m unstarred, I’m not sure it ever got spotted by anyone. :(

That’s because Resident Evil more or less started the whole zombie genre. It was new and innovative at the time. Now, it’s just common place. They need to do something different to stay relevant.
