For sure. We were in Hokkaido this past fall, but flew there directly without stopping in Tokyo (layover in Honolulu). But for future trips to Okinawa or Nagasaki, for sure.

With regards to the JR Pass, it *can* prove more cost-effective to not get it. I spent 6 weeks there in 2015 and despite taking shinkansen on many legs and not getting the JR pass, we came out ahead.

The best spot for an ATM is at the ubiquitous 7-11. They almost always have international ATMs and there’s a 7-11 every few blocks throughout most major cities and even some smaller towns too.

There’s some good advice here. Where I can consolidate is with the phone. Having a Pixel on T-Mobile means long battery life and free international data.
