I think proximity dictates value. I live in SoCal, so it isn’t surprising that USC is held as the pillar of any university in this area since its competition is UCLA, UCSD, USD, SDSU, CSUN, CSULB & CSUCI, of which only one or two many people may have heard. If I decide to tip less at a restaurant, in order to save money, the restaurant employee who was helping me does get paid less.

Which is funny, because the person doing the tipping feels none of the economic pressures of the waitstaff.

I think the phrase “taking $ out of some person’s pocket” needs to be better defined. Going down your rabbit hole, not eating out at all is taking even more than $2 out of a restaurant worker’s pocket; more like jeopardizing their livelihood entirely.
