Despite the fact that 3 or 4 months (or even 6 months) is still in Newborn territory, I don’t think it was even just about paid maternity leave. She would have lost her job if she didn’t go back after three months, And that is the sad part.

It doesn’t sound like they couldn’t afford to have children though; just that they couldn’t afford to have one of the parents out of work.

My heart breaks for this mother. So many other countries allow for more maternity leave time (sometimes much of it is even paid!). I cannot understand why America does not make maternity leave more of a priority. No parent should have to leave their child with “strangers” while the baby is still a newborn.
