The difference being that El Nino measurements are from the 3-4 area in the pacific, hence why it’s called 3.4, which is all this data is displaying. I’m sure there’s data out there about how any specific El Nino event effected overall temps for sea surface and land for the year but I’ve never looked it up.

Can someone explain that graph? What does the gold line represent? What do the blue bars represent? No clue what to make of it but it looks like it could be insightful!

The only NOAA plot I’ve seen is probably the same one you’re describing which is a table view of the deviation from average. Not the best visualization.
