It should probably be second millennium, not second century. The latter statement is correct.

Seeing as we haven’t discovered all the species of living animals yet, then I’d be very surprised if we managed to discover all extinct ones of any time period.

It’s a shame this article links most criticism of Berger’s claims to his quick and open-access publication, because I work alongside many, many scholars who applaud his move to publish quickly and openly, but maintain their criticism of his conclusions based on the assumptions he’s made about the find.
