Stumptown got the ax, huh? It makes sense that they would cancel a crime noir with the potential to explore the deceptively complex and conflicted social legacy underlying the cheerily liberal facade of Portland, Oregon. It’s not as if any related themes might resonate with what’s going on nowadays.
I get the feeling this review is demanding a little too much. The show seems to present itself pretty openly as Gothic camp, and it seems a little unwarranted to expect such a project to do justice to the moral and philosophical complexity inherent in the historical subject matter. Breihan mentions it briefly, but I think there is strangely little acknowledgment in general of just how nonsensical the titular speech is. I remember watching the movie as an 8-year-old and wondering what the hell the concept of independence has to do with the world-historic challenge facing humanity.
