He also advocated for an immigration policy that is actually slavery. Like, he said farmers really needed workers. But those workers shouldn’t have rights.

Okay. I swear I’m not saying this to be mean.
This a new low— candidates arguing over how much water it is reasonable to drink.
Agreed— Especially to your last point, that’s why I don’t like the descriptor of “evil” for this, or for the Nazis. It absolves us all of blame; we’re not evil like them, so we won’t ever do those evil things!
This reminds me of how I was sitting in one of the most prestigious law schools in the country and I overheard a white girl telling a white guy, “I just feel so bad for white men. They are so demonized and people are so horrible to them!”
I agree. I know it’s entitlement/frustration/anger, but most people do not deal with it in such an extreme way. It seems like a huge leap to be like, “Yeah he was just mad and entitled— therefore he shot 10 strangers.”
While I know that there is not a substantive link between mental illness and violence, I still think you do have to be a certain kind of mentally ill to plan and execute amass shooting. It’s not autism, or schizophrenia, or the 1000 other diseases that humans have, but it’s something.
I want to see them drag Robert Pattinson kicking and screaming into a movie version of this. His self-loathing and Twilight-trolling is one of my favorite things.
I live in Washington, DC.
I’m not kidding, I want my kids to have the “smart ass” skill. Even if it gets them into trouble at school, I don’t care. It’s better to be someone who both questions what they’re being told and calls the person out on their bs.
Exactly...I’m all for complex views of history, but saying, “No it wasn’t about slavery— it was about states’ rights,” just obfuscates the issue— deliberately.
Haha I wish my 13 year old self had the courage to say that exact phrase....especially in my Catholic school.
I don’t know, I really think you should’ve led with the “wanting to start a new Civil War” thing. The drinking blood/sacrifice thing compared to that is really just secondary.
OH my god, are we the same person? Other than the fact I am actually white and was born in America.
These changes will be reflected in the digital version of the program immediately and will be included in the program’s next print run.
“We can do better.”
This is straight-up a plot line from House of Cards!
My fiance is in law school, and sometimes he reads Scalia’s opinions out loud to me.
I don’t think I fully understood the Little Sisters of the Poor until now. Thank you, New York Times:
Can we talk about how scary it will be if we get a Republican president next and they get a say in appointing the next justices??? That’s actually one of my biggest concerns for the next 4-8 years!
