Yeah, the 986 Boxster has a tight engine bay, though according to 986forum.com and rennlist.com it is very DIY-able. The 996 certainly is, if you’re mechanically inclined. A decent 986 Boxster, well maintained and with the IMS done recently could be had for under 10k.
Maintenance isn’t cheap, but the smiles-per-miles…

You could probably even swing a 987 Boxster for similar money. No backseats, but the ones in the Mustang pretty much useless anyways. Plus, extra storage, mid-engine, etc.

Or the Lexus, which would mess with people’s perception, as the only ones I see around are older ladies driving them. So, especially if you mod them…
