There are many reasons external to film why the Erotic Thriller waned - social ‘progress’ in the heat of the 90's culture war, the advent of the internet and it’s enablement of sexual exploration, even the rise of film as more pure escapism in the shadow of 9/11.

I remember a period of time where I had seen the good one and literally everyone else had seen the shitty one, and when they said they had seen Crash and how much they had enjoyed it I just kind of looked at them funny.
