On https://www.reddit.com/r/idiotsincars/ they call SUVs Suddenly Upsidedown Vehicles.
“Ford Pintos are prone to exploding when rear ended.”
In no world does a Corvette or a Miata hit the rear three quarters of a hatchback and do anything but crash into it and maybe get stuck.
You’ve seen videos of Miatas and Corvettes flipping at low speeds after hitting the rear corner of a slow nearly stopped vehicle?
Fun story about that. I was returning a car to Frankfurt and hear this conversation in the parking garage between the renter (older guy originally from India) and the rental car guy (a base brat that ended up staying in Germany).
I got hit in a crosswalk, in broad daylight, with right of way. There was no way to avoid it, since they hit me in the back. An SUV probably would have killed me.
Not to mention the fact that being up so high actually prevents you from being able to see smaller objects around your car, that are below the door and hood line. You know like, curbs, parking blocks, basketball sized rocks... children...
No sedan on Earth, let alone a sports coupe, would have flipped from this accident.
The height and shape of the grille makes the SUV/truck more dangerous, regardless of weight. Where you get hit matters. A car will hit you in the legs. An SUV will hit you right where all your vital organs, spinal cord, neck and head are. The weight just compounds that issue several times over.
SUVs give you a worse view of your immediate surroundings (consequence of geometry), which is bad in heavy traffic.
