A classic conservative tactic.

Pish posh! Why, back in my day, we would have been utterly AGHAST at such rudeness! This esteemed woman EARNED her wealth and position - although how exactly escapes me at the moment - and therefor has every right to express whatever views she wishes!

The only people who are going to be upset about this, people who focus on “civility” instead of the content of the message, are people who are looking for something to be upset about anyway. Fuck the optics.

Yes. Why can’t we treat shitty people who want to do shitty things with more DECORUM and RESPECT. The only way they will realize how disliked they are for the shitty things they want to do is if everyone sits politely and smiles at them.

She is an unreliable narrator, but I’m not sure that’s clear in light of the reframing of the story as a mystery. The people claiming she is lying are doing so, and convincing others of it, with ulterior motives. In short, they’re all unreliable and I think in the end the viewer is meant to trust Hannah most of all.

My best friend killed herself at the age of 21. She didn’t do this because of any of the bad things that happened in her life. She did this because she was depressed and did not think life was worth living.

I think a lot of this is very relevant to the typically-functioning teen, and a very good and even-handed evaluation of the way the series fails its audience.

When my stepsibling’s baby got upset I leaned in and said in my most gentle voice “ shhhhhh, in this house we only scream on the inside. Lock away all your pain and suffering deep inside of you, because you will soon find that no-one will ever understand you in a way you find meaningful. The despair never gets easier

“But it’s usually wine, so does it count?”

Yes. I’m not entirely sure when decided that borderline alcoholism was adequately waved away if the beverage in question was grape-derived, but here we are.

No lie, me and all my friends got knocked up within 2 years of each other and the only thing that’s changed about us is that we’re all 10-15 minutes late to everything now. And our houses are messier.

To them, wine “doesn’t count” in the same way that prescriptions for multiple benzos don’t either. “My doctor gave them to me— It’s not like I have a needle in my arm!”

She has a job— her blog— which she is #blessed to have. You act like being an inspiration to others isn’t work!!

I can’t carry a tune with both hands a bucket, so my children grew up listening to me monotone my way through the theme from The Addams Family TV show. Three-month-old babies find finger snaps HILARIOUS. And concerning. But mostly, hilarious.

When women start doing that to me, and hit them with the “ehn, mine’s a little on the slow side, but he’s sweet and happy, but I drank like a fish through most of my pregnancy, so [shrug!]”

This, all fucking day. My partner and I had a baby back in August, and while things are different and more challenging we’ve made a conscious effort to not divert our lives drastically. We created a life and it is now part of our lives, we are not a part of hers. Being a parent is hard, regardless if you’re the Mom or

I think this story made me even more lesbian, and I’m pretty goddamn non-child-wanting lesbian! The fuck is wrong with these people?!

My wife nearly went insane reading our local Brooklyn neighborhood mommy board. I gently suggested she not read it because it seemed that everyone was just trying to outdo each other with how smart their kid was, how quickly they reached benchmarks, etc.

Excuse me while I snort my birth control off my desk.

I agree with basically all of this, but I have a much less charitable take on it. I would never suggest that Scheff is using his status as a survivor to justify any disagreement with experts and audience members, but I do think that the other elements of who he is (being white and male, especially) have maybe blinded
