You make a good point. Dune is at its heart a simple, fairly contained story. The unwieldy part is largely how much of a psychological/philosophical story it is, and how difficult that is to translate from the page to the screen. But as you say, Villeneuve is a master at doing just that.

I think it was one of the top films of the year and certainly deserving of a Bets Picture nomination. I’d also go so far to suggest that it’s one of the finest science fiction films of this generation and one of the few sequels to an older title that actually manages to continue it’s story in an organic fashion.

Less Jared Leto goes without saying.

Jared Leto’s character was a thing I either wanted less of or more of. I think less could have been done without hurting the final product, but plot wise everything he’s there for is worthwhile in the end. He was the biggest mystery for me when it came to the film and I loved it, not truly knowing anything while him

...oh my god. Homesteaders on Tatooine just surviving, distilling water, interacting with traders, (hopefully not eating boiled potatoes)... The textures and sound palette that Tarr could play with would be goddamn unreal. If Johnson’s next trilogy doesn’t work out as planned, hmm...

This turns unwatchable into messy, at least.

yeah it’s very poorly worded. I almost feel like that was the intent. I wouldn’t have clicked on the link otherwise because it’s almost a “no duh?” moment.

Can an adult Kirsten Dunst be the main villain? Like her parallel dimension child character who survived the game grew up really fucked in the head and discovered how to get back into the game and rule over it. She only feels truly alive by putting other children’s lives in danger.

Based on the headline, I thought you meant the writers of the original Jumanji movie.

It seems like everybody is misunderstanding everybody else. My takeaway was:

One more thing:

everyone going “well he should have sent a stunt double” is kinda saying negligence is okay if a famous person doesn’t get hurt.

a. So, a person’s age excuses them from acknowledging that other people are inherently human and deserve basic civil rights?

Believing that LGBTQ people need to be “cured” is not some middle ground where a decent person can respect the other side’s POV.

The key to 2020 is getting out the Dem/Liberal base: people of color, young single white women, and people who are LGBTQ. If they energize those groups, then perhaps they can win. Bernie is a deadend. maybe a Castro-Warren or Booker-Warren ticket works, but more likely a Harris-Castro or Harris-Brown ticket works

For some of us, the humor is how we deal with it. Cause it’s that or alcoholism.

The humor is that most white liberals still think they can pry Trumpinistas away from him in 2020, if they only “speak” to Trumpinista issues. The truth is that if The Dems are to win, they must admit that Trumpinistas are at least one of the following and thus lost forever: racial bigots, sexists, homophobes,

It’s relevant that, due to being written by Maureen Dowd, the NYT article is at times so maddeningly unclear that its impossible to determine the sequence of events or responsibility for certain decisions. It’s almost clearer if you skip all of the MoDO writerer-ing and read Uma’s direct quotes.

That so many Americans think this is the butt of a good leader boggles my mind:
