Yes. I can conjure an exact image of my house, but have a hard time picturing my parents or my husband. Unlike you, though, I do forget the faces of people that I meet. Also, I am a chemist and can visualize molecular interactions (probably similar to your visualization of computer code).

I can model things in my brain pan with my eyes open or closed. I can visualize 3D objects and computer code no problem. What I can’t visualize are people’s faces. I know them when I see them in reality. I can say that I never forget a face when I see them with my eyeballs. But for memories, I rely heavily on photos…

While there is something to be said that form follows funtion, that is, when you are designing a reusable space plane that is just how it is going to look. The Martian is HARD science fiction. Nothing like the two things you mention. If they get it right it should be the first good hard space movie in a long time (Gravity being great but not quite as “hard”).
