You’re pretty close to the mark actually. The wheel doesn’t necessarily need to shatter (you may want to load something behind it to dissipate load, which would require the wheel to be intact) but the issue is likely one of wheel kinematics. I’m guessing here that the wheel turned inboard more than was expected…

I was just barely leaning NP until I saw the seller’s thing about only selling the car to a loving home. Fuck that. It’s an appliance, not the goddamn Rosetta Stone. Are you going to do a home check to make sure the buyer has a garage? CP because the seller is a tool. I do like the car though.
