In Europe I’ve found that on your birthday you pay for everything.
Just to throw it out there...
If someone invites me out for my birthday, I would think (but not assume) that it is their treat. But if I’m inviting friends to come out to celebrate my birthday with me, I’m the hostess and I will pay, at the very least for the venue and food. They’re welcome to buy me a drink, though.

This has been the case for years. The US news is constantly reporting that Israel retaliated for x, y or z.... always framed as defensive rather than offensive. Meanwhile Palestinians never retaliate but always instigate.
