Saaaaaaame. Now my siblings make fun of me for being Fancy and Elitist. Shitheads! We come from the same place.

I hadn’t seen this movie in at least ten years and on Thanksgiving we hid from family and watched it because my beloved had never watched it.

I agree with you 100%! But people have commented on these articles, calling Nancy a princess and alluding to her privilege, and that’s pretty freaking unfair to Nancy. Relative privilege, sure, but her dad was a welder.

Don’t get me wrong! I feel infinitely worse for Kerrigan, but I feel bad for Tonya. Her one huge terrible glaring heinous crime doesn’t mean I don’t feel bad for her in the context of her abuse.

it seemed like there was a lot of “hey, remember THIS from 1995?!” that didn’t really serve the stakes/plot?

Same! I was even a tiny little figure skater when this happened! It was definitely the first news story I was ever OBSESSED with, which kind of amused my parents because otherwise I was a very mild little kid. At least until middle school.

Yeah I guess we’re in a weird territory here—how ethical/worthwhile is it to make a “mean” movie, especially about recent history? Madeleine points out that people did seem to enjoy it, but in a troubling way. Meanwhile, Jerry-Netherland down there says “Harding participated in and gave her blessing to this film.” So

Noooooooo this is disappointing. I wanted them to make something really good out of it. Don’t get me wrong, for the life of me I couldn’t see how they would strike the right tone—it’s a much easier thing to do in a trailer than in a full-length movie—but I wanted good cinema to come from this. Sigh.

It wasn’t a waste of time for those reasons! But it was definitely flirting with the idea of being a waste of time.

Did anyone watch Landline? I really wanted to love it but I just...didn’t? Good 90s nostalgia, but it didn’t seem like it had a lot of forward motion. Somehow the parallel situations of the parents and the kid weren’t fleshed out enough to be moving or interesting (to me). Thoughts?

Most likely another employee?

Politicians have to represent their party and its voters. His actions aren’t bad enough to get him fired from an office job, but they’re bad enough to make him an ineffective politician who is currently doing more bad than good for the Democratic *cough* hypocrit *cough* party. Just because his actions aren’t AS BAD

Ah, okay, so basically more money, or maybe more vacation time in the future? I can get behind that.

Book early!

But the APA filed a grievance saying that proposal violates its labor contract, and prefers instead to reach a solution that will motivate pilots to give up vacation they’ve already been granted, Dennis Tajer, an APA spokesman, told the Chicago Tribune.

It’s true.

I now consider this video to be The Explanation. Fellow White Folks: if you want to say the N-word, even if it’s just “to quote a song,” please give enough of a damn to watch this video from beginning to end. And then rethink your ability to simply...stop singing...when you get to that lyric.

oh, i believe it. stupid reading brain!

This is all so very well put. And, I would add to all that the words of igotwords to it above: they’re satisfied “as long as they get to look down on someone.” Settling for a shitty place in the system means you’re not at the bottom of the totem pole.

That’s a really good point. In this case, as in many cases, it comes down to money issues dressed up as, or at least completely entangled with, “values.”
