Disclaiming #notallyoungermen and now that’s out of the way— I think it’s pretty undeniable that in the age of increasingly available cheap or free internet porn that doesn’t fuck up your computer forever, this is an inevitable trend. And proof that porn “fantasies” have consequences IRL for their viewers.
No, I don’t. But I’ve known my share of “broken” guys (their descriptor) who can’t use condoms because of the way they’re conditioned by secretly and shamefully getting their sexual education via porn. As I said, if we, as a society, were more vocal about porn and condoms, young people can at least know what’s…
Seriously— the erotic map thing is so, so real. Although I don’t think the government has a place regulating sex between consenting adults, we as a society have a responsibility to be more vocal about condom use and the inaccuracies of the porn industry. Being Puritan about it and saying nothing is unhealthy and…
‘Note the phrase “our saving grace,” so overloaded with religious devotion. We are still within the first narrative, where it is a positive, necessary act of faith to vote for Clinton. A vote against her, for Sanders, is to be graceless, metaphorically cast to hell.’
I think that’s totally right. Looking at the immediate after effects of helicoptering, I feel like it doesn’t make for more confident or even very creative young adults. They’re stifled— and we can chock a lot of it up to too much standardized testing, but a large part of it is due to needing approval at every turn…
So gross but not at all surprising. I definitely was thrown under the bus by admin to please parents a couple of times— and that school wonders why it has a high turnover rate. Parents have a consumerist attitude toward it, too— like how dare you not give me the product I desire! Because I don’t work for you, fool! I…
Hahaha I know that request so well! I broke down and made a wiki page parents could access to see their kid’s weekly homework assignments. It sucked because it didn’t allow me to be as flexible as I normally would have been but what can I say? Parents ruin everything.
“letting the ‘scientific method paradigm’ modify personality”
It’s so frustrating and so true! But as much as I goof out with my own students and fellow grad students, I turn into a studentbot in front of my own advisors, so I also get it a tiny bit. But NOT around peers— no excuse for the peer chilliness!
Don’t get me wrong. The PTA was amazing. (I’m looking at you, teachers lounge cookies!) But the PTA is also like a beacon for the Problem Parents. It’s the perfect arena to act out their fantasies of tyranny.
:)
This is SO MUCH NIGHTMARE packed into one comment. You impress me.
Oh hell. My friends who teach languages and have a lot of quizzes have more issues with immature students. I think because the nature of those classes is more like high school, maybe? But I'm lucky because I get them sitting around a seminar table, discussing The Literature. Way out of their comfort zone.
Oh no. You've made me fear a new fear.
Ha, same! I’m TAing now and my students are pretty wonderful but there’s a certain chaotic energy mixed with wonder and awe that you rarely find in a college classroom. I think it’s because college students are trying to become “adults” and present as “mature”— it gets in the way of their brain joy.
I loved teaching high schoolers so much you guys but so much of my energy was devoted to dealing with crazy parents and appeasing the uber-PTA crowd. When you’re that involved in your kids’ school life, you are taking teachers’ attention away from creative lesson planning and timely grading. Moreover, it’s not like…
Oh I wasn’t suggesting we do away with urinals, just put them in a stall. The issue with these dude lawmakers seems to be the exposure of genitalia. This only happens in a men’s bathroom. Easy solution: put urinals in a stall!
