As an anthropologist, I feel the need to clarify. There is much that is problematic about Mead's work, but I wouldn't consider her as a forerunner to scientific racism in anthro. Instead, her work reflects some of the thinking of earlier anthropological racists and in some cases, is actually a critique of them.
Growing up and devouring a sci-fi author's books but despising his politics seems to be a rite of passage. For me it was Heinlein. He wrote the most exciting galaxy spanning science fiction of anyone, but it is often infused with the most disturbing far right political rants, vile sexism and even the occasional…
