I'm not sure I understand this connection. If someone wanted to make films about women because films about women are underrepresented, why would it automatically follow that the films would be bad?
"I don't understand how you're making the jump from a simple observation to the full blown fascism of telling artists what to do. "
1. Who is telling Speilberg what to do?
2. Who said Speilberg was a bad person?
lol I'm not missing it at all. I just disagree with you. Just like you disagree with Elizabeth Banks, but instead of just saying you disagree with her you have to pat her on the head and call her misguided, just like you're patting me on the head and saying I just don't understand. It's patronizing. I understand…
Why would you say that?
Why are you yelling movie titles at me?
The OP said that JP was "relatively even, gender-wise." That was just a false statement. Nothing in your analysis changes that.
"Right but she's leveling her criticism at Spielberg and his work, not at a system that actively gives males a chance more than females."
No one is saying he's wrong. Looking at it in those terms muddies the issue. There's also no reason to assume that he has done this internal work, which is all he's being asked to do. The OP said he should be able to make the films he wants, and literally no in in the world said he can't make the films he wants.
By making a movie about Sojourner Truth, or Madame Curie, or Sacagawea, or any number of notable women in history instead, for one. But out of like 60 movies, yeah, you really got me with these 7.
It's always a good idea to look within yourself and examine why you do the things you do, and to examine your internal biases and how you perceive the world. This is not too much to ask, especially of someone who claims to be an artist. Examining how your internal biases effect the world around you is a quality way…
I'm not being silly, and yes I'm taking the words you say literally. That's why I specifically asked you who was trying to force him to do anything. If you didn't mean the word "force," then don't use the word "force." Don't call me silly for taking the word you say to mean what the word means. The fact is no one…
Sure, but the issue is why doesn't he want to. Women direct movies with male leads all the time. He could do some introspection as to why he won't do female leads.
I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you there, though I'll have to take your word on the budget. Jaws was also a horror movie.
Really? I didn't see anything about her forcing anyone to do anything. How would she do this? Would it involve guns or something? Because all I saw was her saying that he didn't have any films with female leads.
I think that's definitely part of the problem as well, maybe even the larger part. However, as powerful as Speilberg is, he could get away with it if he wanted. He has his own production company. He is "studios."
"should he be forced to make an equal share of his art about women or stories from a female perspective"
It's not 1980 anymore. Plus, Sigourney Weaver led Alien in 1979.
Elizabeth Banks. It's literally right there in the headline.
