It’s not a question of too exorbitant. It’s paying a fair amount for the actual work performed. The actual work serving a table is 10 minutes, tops, and 99% of the time it doesn’t even involve bringing the food to the table. Someone else does that. That’s not really worth much of a tip.

Again, doesn’t absolve the customer. If they do not wish to participate in the social obligation then they should probably refrain from places that have tip jars.
