The entire point of 401ks is that their taxation is already set up. 401k is a tax code. There are other numbered savings and investment accounts with specific tax-deferred status, such as 529s for college savings.

This is limited in scope and exempts retirement accounts, the main way most of us save. As for market effects, that has less to do with a tax and more to do with the market’s disconnect from reality. If stock price were an actual indicator of performance, this would have no real effect. Maybe we could stop seeing…

I’m not saying it’s a good idea - but your examples don’t work.  The linked article specifically noted that principle residences (so, your house), and 401ks would be exempted.

It’s not a bullshit fee just because they might make money on it - It’s a bullshit fee, because it’s a fixed part of the cost of every car, so it could easily be factored into the MSRP.
