The downside of Bond is you basically can’t do anything else while you’re playing the role, so that’s 3-6 years of your prime years gone. That’s an upside for someone like Hiddleston, who I imagine loathes the idea of being known mainly as Loki in his obituary. Bond is much better.
The Hank Williams movie was supposed to be his Oscar bid movie. He promoted the shit out of it, even performing at state fairs and on any radio/TV show that would have him. It was low budgeted but supposed to do better. It didn’t even make a third of its costs back. That’s bad monetarily and reputation wise.
He has a career. A relatively low-wattage one compared with friends Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne. Once you get a hint of what stardom could and should mean, as far as getting parts and getting paid, you can’t go backwards if you’re at all ambitious. And all of these guys are ambitious.
