Taking a plea deal shouldn’t be to avoid a punishment that doesn’t fit the crime. The punishment he’s been sentenced too should never have been a possibility.

For example - putting a bunch of pallets of concrete block onto a flat bed and driving at 80 mph over rough road. The driver doesn’t intend for anyone to die, but shedding those blocks shows extreme indifference.

Doctoral Student....    Grad school is really taxing on people’s psyche.   Slowly but surely wears you down.  Depression in graduate students is really high.

The doors are HARD (but not impossible) to open in flight. Try opening a car door (as a passenger) while someone is driving over 100MPH. That’s not accidental.

See he was reaching out the window to bang ice from the moving windshield wiper and fell out the window. (totally making a joke and only a joke before there are 50 comments  on how factually incorrect my joke is)

If you’ve ever tried to get into and out of one of these things you’ll know its not going to happen by accident.

Here in the US, if you hear hoofbeats, you should think horses, not zebras.  He was in the plane when it took off; he wasn’t in it when it crashed; he was the only one in the plane.  The most likely explanation is he jumped.  I don’t understand why people see the need to make up outlandish theories.
