I’ve been saying that I like both that Batmobile and the current one for the same reason: They are cars. You can imagine actually driving one down the street without difficulty.

I doubt the payout would make up for the cost of hiring a lawyer, but maybe I’m wrong. I also wonder how having sued an insurance company, a matter of public record, would affect the ability to get insurance from any other company in the future. (I take it as given that they’ll drop him if  he sues, of course.)

Yeah, I’d love to know the whole story here. I understand why people are looking askance at the Go Fund Me, but without knowing the full story I’m really reluctant to judge.
Also, frankly, if my property got destroyed as part of someone else’s monetized, viral stunt, I don’t think I’d have any qualms about trying to

1. I don’t have to, no, but it’s usually cheaper because of multiple-vehicle discounts..
2. The definition of “permanently installed” seems rather vague (and I do have a portable chemical toilet I often use in the van) but I didn’t want to push it and wind up with a policy that could be rescinded for fraud if I ever

Yeah. I’m sort of stuck with AAA because they’re one of the only companies that would insure my camper van (even for liability.) Most car insurance companies rejected it because it had a commercial VIN, and RV insurance companies rejected it because it doesn’t have a permanently installed toilet(!)

Just because it’s illegal doesn’t mean people don’t drive without insurance. Even when they’re caught the police rarely do anything about it, and good luck tracking them down after they shrug and drive off.

I haven’t priced out comprehensive and collision on my Del Sol; they won’t even quote on a car that old without inspecting it first. I can tell you that on my 2018 Clarity the collision premium alone is over $422/year, more than the entire rest of that car’s policy put together.
It’s not worth it to me to spend a bunch

He probably still won’t get enough money to replace the car, though. Book values have not kept up with skyrocketing used car prices.

When I last priced it out it more than doubled the cost. Like, literally over half the insurance premium on one of my cars is collision.

I ran into that too when I lived in MI — one of my cars got hit while parked and I didn’t have collision on it, but it didn’t matter because no-fault doesn’t apply when hitting stationary property.
Also California isn’t a no-fault state, so the discussion is a bit moot.
I’ve always thought it must get messy when someone

I’m wondering if he got caught in the classic bind where the insurance company won’t do anything without a police report, and the police won’t do anything because it was a property crime with no injuries.

I’ve gotten in four accidents in my life and in three of them the driver was either uninsured or ran. :/

They’re wrong, CA is not a no-fault state. The 12 states with no-fault are Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Utah. In those states your insurance pays for your car and your injuries, period.

CA is not a no-fault state.

That would be my guess. He’d need uninsured motorist insurance to get a payout here. On an older car that isn’t always worth it. I don’t carry comprehensive, collision, or uninsured motorist coverage on my Del Sol, for example, because the book value is only $2,700.

Revenge *is* a dish best served cold.

Honestly the biggest tell isn’t that they were filming, it’s that the person holding the camera doesn’t react to the wreck. Normally people lower the phone reflexively or at least have a startle reaction when something unexpected happens. This is exactly what the person holding the phone expected to see.

I think the only reason they didn’t is they’re already convinced that Pelosi has laid a trap for them and will throw them all in jail if they step out of line.

If they were arguing for better wages and more places to park so they could sleep at night, I’d have respected them a lot more.

Would depend on the rental contract, I’d think? If I rent a car from Hertz and wreck it they sure aren’t paying the bills.
