During the switch from mobileme to iCloud, Apple lost about 4,000 emails. I called Applecare and there was nothing that could be done. Naturally, I was highly pissed but I asked the rep about restoring with Time Machine and he walked me through it. Everything was restored but it was only because of my local backup.
