That is one way to move to the lower left of the Gatsby Curve if you can get voters to agree. However few people in America would be happy with the tax rates needed to get to say a Denmark.

I don’t think that matters, and I don’t think that this should be a partisan issue.

Show me any other country that doesn’t have income inequality and then we can talk about what the solutions might be.

Deserves the other good chart from the article. The fact that the tax code is progressive doesn’t change the fact that there is enormous and growing income inequality in the USA that persists even after taxation.

Aside from Kelly’s reaction, this whole defense spending episode is just so fucking stupid. Instead of the rest of us jacking up our military spending to wartime levels of funding, how about the US brings its spending down to 2% of GDP and put the $300B per year in savings towards pulling tens of millions of Americans

Aside from this stupid “it’s dishonorable that they didn’t play to our strengths” angle, I think it’s super hypocritical for a goalkeeper in particular to have this take.

It totally makes sense that the WaPo folks should unionize to improve their negotiating power, but I don’t really get what Bezos’ personal wealth has to do with the equation other than to rile up the Splinter crowd.

Fair enough, perhaps it falls outside the definition of socialized medicine since only the funding is socialized while delivery isn’t. I’m Canadian so am very familiar with a single-payer system. I’ve always thought of it as socialized health care since we collectively as a society spread responsibility for the

How is it not? I understand that “socialized” is a pejorative in the US but I don’t think it’s inaccurate in this case. Feel free to correct me.

I actually agree with you on the overall approach that the Ds need to take. Really just responding that you could find a ton of districts that would overwhelmingly vote against that platform.

Tell me what district wouldn’t want 80-90% of this.

Prediction: 3 minutes into stoppage time tomorrow, with the game tied 0 -0, Jamie Vardy heroically rips his shirt off to celebrate a throw in and earns the yellow card that ensures England finish 2nd in the group.

I don’t really get the rationale behind this take . Yes, the actions that Paul’s talking about likely had negative effects on these countries, but they were a necessary part of a broader geopolitical effort to ensure communism didn’t spread beyond Cuba in the Western hemisphere. Looking back, at least we can say that

So the guy who was elected by the Tea Party wing of the GOP is threatening Americans with unfair, arbitrary, taxation and his base is loving it. Got it.

I like the sentiment, but I do think countries need to be able to control the pace and composition (skills, experience, education) of immigration. I don’t think letting everyone who would like to move to your country in is a feasible solution because, at least for the western world, there are way more folks who would

Just wanted to say thanks for the response. I’m not super close to the details of the issue so appreciate learning about another possible solution to it. Even though it looks like they’re going the family detention route for the time being, maybe once this administration is replaced they’ll go the route that you

Yep — shameless but unfortunately effective

Think Rivaldo ‘02 still holds the title

That’s totally fair enough. I feel like most of the “discussion” on the topic has been focused on the (rightful) outrage of it all, without really touching on how to solve the underlying issue of trying to eliminate unauthorized entries.

It’s definitely a problem that needs to be fixed, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything from the Splinter commentariat as to what the right solution is.
