It's because in medicine, the length of a pregnancy is typically counted this way. Just so there's a standard for how to measure. Unfortunately, that got passed along into the legal definition of length of pregnancy.

I just heard about it today, and was curious. No other reason.

We have hard water, so I also use a 50/50 water/vinegar mix periodically, and boil it up in the kettles to get rid of the white scale.

I put it in a spray bottle (sometimes with essential oil to smell nice) and use it as an all-purpose cleaner. Good for outsides of toilets, kitchen counters, window ledges, and so on.
