It’s not the literal concept of people thinking that men cannot be raped, but that true men cannot be raped.

I miss Tony Benn

Just throwing this out there - I’m pretty certain the British Army wasn’t deployed in the Victorian era to Morocco or Tunisia? I think the Spanish and French claimed sphere of influence on those countries respectively

I always get edgy when Americans start talking about events in the news here because it is always only a skip and a jump until you have some lunatic stretching to “goddamn liberals” and their evil socialist ways.

Sam Allardyce being bent

Really? What the else where they going to give for vandalism? That’s a normal sentence

Sadly no. I had to stand there cleaning a bar listening to people talk about how it was a disgraceful that people of my girlfriend’s race were allowed in to the country. I quit not long after for unrelated reasons, but it made me so happy to think I wouldn’t have to listen to those racists windbags ever again.

Most of the British MPs for Brexit went to private school. There are plaques in most private schools dedicated to the boys and masters who died in the wars (I went to one).

I wonder if as children they looked at them and reflected on what those who became gaps in people’s lives meant and what the cause of it all was.

Rivers of Blood for our time. Side note - I worked in a bar last year and genuinely heard someone say in conversation “Enoch Powell was right”. This country has a long road in front of it

I can’t believe we have come to the point where we will let Boris Johnson be the principal representative for Britain.

I used to help run a local MPs meeting at the local CAB office. Basically members of the public come and raise issues, i.e. not enough parking, difficulties affording rents, concerns about their child’s disability payments etc etc. The MP then takes this issues, helps where they can, and takes stuff to be raised with

It started off that way, then the dog whistling started

Gordon Brown may not have been the best prime minister, but he has a heart

It’s not a coincidence that this occurred now. Nor is it a coincidence that a woman highly involved with Oxfam and advocating for helping child refugees was targeted. It’s a real shit show

There are reports that he shouted “Britain First” when making the attack, Britain First being a far-right anti-immigration group. The MP was known for supporting bringing more refugee children into the UK.

So it’s not confirmed, but there does appear to be a racial element, if indirect.

“While it’s hilarious they got knocked out like this...”

I’m afraid we’ll have to disagree then High Charity. I don’t seem to share the same negative view you have of humanity or its potential to better itself.

100 years ago in Britain my great grandfathers were working in ship yards for subsistence wages, no healthcare if they or their partner got sick and most of them died in their fifties having lived mean, short lives. My great grandmothers didn’t have the vote and were practically chained into doing drudge work around

Overall, I would say the world is progressing in the right direction. It’s just a slow and stumbling journey. Whether it’s in a 100 years or not, I think the day will come when humanity is better than this.

Sadly, this is part of the world we live in. Also I’m pretty sure Jez has been reporting on this kind of stories forever.
