I liked the LOST finale too, and it remains by far my favourite series, but you can't really blame lack of planning for any missteps, since the writers actively demanded a set end-point for the series after season 3.

We don't freak out. Out lips just get progressively stiffer.
I know but I mean I'm glad the Doctor didn't actively let her out of the vault itself in order to help take the Monks down, only for her to run away before going back in.
Michelle Gomez plays every role to the hilt. Just look at her performance in Green Wing.
You could argue (somewhat tenuously) that The Doctor is saying this sort of tongue-in-cheek, as in "yeah that whole last of the Timelords thing isn't really true, case in point: this woman."
Mark Gatiss has already written an Ice Warrior episode in Cold War, which was one of his better ones.
Capaldi sold it about as well as he possibly could, though.
AND the better virtual reality world.
